Complete Tru-Oil Kit for Finishing or Restoring a Wood Gun Stock
The Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish Kit 23801 brings together the primary materials needed to finish a new wood gun stock or refinish an existing one. The kit combines wood preparation, staining, protective finishing and final surface conditioning products in one package, along with application cloths and instructions.
At the center of the kit is Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish, a long-established blend of linseed and other natural oils formulated to bring out the grain and color of fine wood while creating a durable, water-resistant finish.
Three Three-Ounce Finishing Products
The kit contains three fluid ounces each of Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish, Walnut Stain and Stock Sheen & Conditioner. Together, these products address the principal coloring, finishing and final-conditioning stages of a wood gun-stock project.
- Walnut Stain: Used to add or deepen walnut coloration before the protective finish is applied. The final shade will vary according to the wood species, existing color, preparation and application.
- Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish: Builds a protective finish that highlights the wood grain, resists water damage and is formulated not to cloud, yellow or crack with age.
- Stock Sheen & Conditioner: Used after the Tru-Oil finish has fully cured to smooth minor surface imperfections and produce a softer, hand-rubbed satin appearance.
Preparation and Application Supplies Included
Proper surface preparation is one of the most important parts of stock refinishing. This kit includes fine, medium and coarse abrasive papers, fine steel wool, service cloths and polishing cloths to support the preparation and finishing process.
A complete instruction guide is also included. Follow those instructions for surface preparation, drying time, application order and curing. Rushing the preparation or applying additional coats before the previous coat has dried can affect the final appearance.
Suitable for New Stocks and Refinishing Projects
Use the kit to finish an unfinished wood stock, restore the appearance of a worn stock or replace an aging finish after the original coating has been properly removed. It is suitable for compatible wood rifle, shotgun and muzzleloader stocks.
When refinishing an older stock, removal of the original finish may require a separate finish stripper or additional repair materials that are not included. Deep dents, cracks, oil-soaked wood, damaged checkering and structural repairs should be corrected before applying the new finish.
Control the Final Appearance
Tru-Oil naturally develops a rich, glossy finish as additional coats are applied. The number and thickness of the coats, preparation of the wood and treatment after curing all affect the finished appearance.
For a softer satin effect, Birchwood Casey’s refinishing guide instructs users to allow the final Tru-Oil coat to cure for at least seven days before applying Stock Sheen & Conditioner. Always defer to the instructions packaged with the current product.
Wood Grain and Color Will Vary
Every gun stock is different. Wood species, grain density, previous oil penetration, remaining finish, sanding and stain absorption can all change the final color and sheen. Test the stain and finishing process on an inconspicuous area or a comparable piece of wood before treating the entire stock.
Important Chemical-Safety Information
