The ARO EVO SPR — Now with Holosun's High-Contrast Gold Reticle

The Holosun ARO EVO SPR Gold AROEVOSPRGD combines the speed of a modern 1x enclosed rifle sight with a reticle designed to provide considerably more information than a conventional single red dot.

At its center is a precise 1.5 MOA gold aiming dot. Three 1 MOA bullet-drop references extend below the center point, while a large 65 MOA outer circle helps draw the eye quickly into the sight during close-range shooting. Integrated ranging marks give the shooter additional distance information when the rifle is used beyond typical red-dot ranges.

The result is an optic that remains simple and fast at close distance but gives a properly configured 5.56 rifle useful intermediate-range references without moving all the way to a conventional magnified optic.

Gold SPR — Special Purpose Reticle

Holosun's Special Purpose Reticle is the feature that separates this model from the standard 2 MOA ARO EVO.

The SPR consists of:

  • 1.5 MOA center aiming dot
  • Three 1 MOA bullet-drop compensation points
  • 65 MOA outer acquisition circle
  • Integrated distance-ranging references

Holosun calibrates the BDC around M193 5.56 ammunition at approximately 3,050 FPS. The three holdover points correspond to approximately 300, 400 and 500 yards under the intended ballistic conditions.

The horizontal ranging references correspond to an approximately 18-inch-wide target at their respective distances.

As with any BDC reticle, actual point of impact will vary with barrel length, ammunition velocity, sight height, atmospheric conditions and the rifle's actual zero. The reticle provides useful reference points, but those holds should be confirmed with the rifle and ammunition being used.

Why Gold?

This version of the ARO EVO SPR uses a 590nm gold LED rather than the more familiar red or green emitter.

Reticle color is largely a matter of shooter preference and individual eyesight, but the gold reticle provides another high-contrast option for shooters who find it easier to distinguish against their normal backgrounds than conventional red or green illumination.

The important point is that choosing Gold does not change the ballistic function of the SPR. It retains the same 1.5 MOA center, 1 MOA BDC holds, 65 MOA circle and ranging system used by the other SPR variants.

Built to Work with a Magnifier

Holosun specifically notes that the SPR is best used with a magnifier.

At true 1x, the large outer circle and center aiming point provide the speed expected from a carbine sight. When a magnifier is placed behind the ARO EVO, the fine 1.5 MOA center dot, individual BDC points and ranging bars become easier to resolve and use at intermediate distances.

That gives the shooter a useful two-mode setup: fast, unmagnified shooting up close and more deliberate aiming when magnification is needed.

Large 26mm Viewing Window

The ARO EVO uses an enlarged 26mm / 1.02-inch viewing window.

The larger sight picture provides more visual information around the reticle and can make it easier to find the aiming point during rapid presentation, track moving targets and transition between targets while maintaining situational awareness.

Holosun designed the ARO EVO housing to pair naturally with its magnifier family without turning the optic itself into an oversized rifle sight.

Solar Failsafe and CR2032 Battery Power

The ARO EVO SPR Gold combines a conventional CR2032 battery with Holosun's Solar Failsafe technology.

Battery life is rated at up to 50,000 hours at brightness setting 6. The battery installs through a side-loading tray, allowing replacement without removing the optic from the rifle and disturbing the mount.

The solar system also supports Holosun's automatic brightness capability, allowing the reticle illumination to respond to changing ambient light conditions.

Shake Awake and Last-Setting Memory

Shake Awake allows the optic to conserve power during periods of inactivity and reactivate when movement is detected.

Last-setting memory returns the optic to its previous illumination setting when it wakes, helping keep a staged or frequently used rifle ready without requiring the shooter to manually reset brightness each time.

12 Brightness Settings

The Gold SPR provides eight daylight brightness settings and four night-vision-compatible settings.

Users can operate the optic manually or use its automatic brightness function. Lockout Mode is also provided to reduce the chance of accidentally changing settings once the optic has been configured.

Two Mount Heights Included

Holosun includes both a 1.63-inch lower 1/3 co-witness mount and a 1.05-inch low mount.

The taller mount is well suited to conventional AR-pattern rifles and carbines, while the low mount allows the optic to sit closer to the receiver on firearms where traditional AR sight height is unnecessary or undesirable.

6061 Aluminum, IPX8 and 1000G Rated

The ARO EVO body is manufactured from 6061 aluminum with a hard-anodized black finish.

Holosun rates the optic for IPX8 water resistance and 1000G vibration resistance. Windage and elevation adjustments move in 0.5 MOA increments with approximately ±50 MOA of available travel.

A General-Purpose 5.56 Optic with More Information on Demand

The real advantage of the ARO EVO SPR is that the additional reticle information does not prevent it from functioning like a conventional close-range sight.

Keep the magnifier out of the way and the shooter has a large-window 1x sight with a fast 65 MOA acquisition circle. Add magnification and the fine center point, BDC marks and ranging references become substantially more useful.

For a general-purpose AR-15 firing ammunition reasonably close to the M193 velocity profile, the Holosun ARO EVO SPR Gold offers an interesting middle ground between a simple red dot and a more complex LPVO.
