Holosun's ARO EVO — With a Reticle Built to Do More Than Make a Dot
The Holosun ARO EVO SPR Green ARO-EVO-SPR-GR takes the speed and simplicity of a 1x enclosed rifle sight and adds something conventional red dots usually lack: useful intermediate-distance information inside the reticle.
At the center is a precise 1.5 MOA green aiming dot. Around it is a large 65 MOA circle for rapid visual acquisition at close range. Below the center are three 1 MOA bullet-drop reference points, while integrated ranging marks give the shooter additional information for estimating distance.
The result is a sight that can still behave like a fast carbine optic up close, but gives a properly configured 5.56 rifle considerably more capability once the target moves beyond ordinary red-dot distance.
The SPR — Special Purpose Reticle
The defining feature of this ARO EVO is Holosun's SPR, or Special Purpose Reticle.
Holosun designed the SPR around M193 5.56 ammunition traveling approximately 3,050 FPS. Its three BDC dots provide reference points corresponding to approximately 300, 400 and 500 yards under the intended ballistic conditions.
The horizontal ranging references are sized around an approximately 18-inch-wide target at their corresponding distances. Rather than requiring the shooter to estimate a hold somewhere beneath a conventional dot, the reticle supplies repeatable visual references directly in the sight picture.
As with any ballistic reticle, the marks are references rather than magic numbers. Actual point of impact changes with barrel length, muzzle velocity, ammunition, optic height, atmospheric conditions and the rifle's actual zero. A shooter should verify the holds with the specific rifle and ammunition being used.
Why the 1.5 MOA Center Dot Matters
A conventional 2 MOA dot is an excellent general-purpose carbine reticle, but Holosun reduced the SPR's central aiming point to 1.5 MOA.
That finer center gives the shooter a more precise aiming reference when the target is small or distant while the surrounding 65 MOA circle remains available for fast visual acquisition at closer ranges.
This combination makes more sense once magnification is added. Holosun specifically notes that the SPR reticle is best used with a magnifier, where its fine center dot, BDC points and ranging references become substantially easier to exploit.
A Larger 26mm Viewing Window
The ARO EVO uses a 26mm / 1.02-inch optical window, giving it a noticeably larger sight picture than many traditional micro red dots.
A larger viewing area can make it easier to acquire the reticle while mounting the rifle, maintain awareness around the target and transition rapidly between targets without making the optic excessively bulky.
The housing also pairs naturally with Holosun's magnifier family, making the SPR version particularly interesting for a general-purpose carbine that needs both close-range speed and useful intermediate-distance capability.
Green 540nm LED Reticle
This model uses a 540nm green LED. Reticle color is ultimately a shooter preference, but many users find green highly visible against common outdoor backgrounds and in bright daylight.
Holosun provides eight daylight brightness settings and four night-vision-compatible settings, along with both manual and automatic brightness control.
Solar Failsafe + CR2032 Battery
The ARO EVO SPR combines a conventional CR2032 battery with Holosun's Solar Failsafe system.
The optic is rated for up to 50,000 hours of battery life at brightness setting 6. A side-loading battery tray allows the CR2032 to be replaced without removing the optic from the rifle and disturbing the mount.
The integrated solar system supplements the battery-powered electronics and supports Holosun's automatic brightness functionality as ambient lighting conditions change.
Shake Awake Keeps the Sight Ready
Shake Awake allows the optic to enter a low-power state after remaining motionless and reactivate when movement is detected. Last-setting memory restores the previous illumination setting rather than forcing the shooter to reset the optic each time.
For a rifle that may spend long periods staged or stored before being picked up, this provides useful battery conservation without requiring the user to manually power the sight on every time the rifle is handled.
Two Mounting Heights Included
Holosun includes both a 1.63-inch lower 1/3 co-witness mount and a 1.05-inch low mount.
The taller mount is well suited to conventional AR-pattern rifles and modern carbines, while the low mount makes the optic easier to adapt to platforms where the sight needs to sit closer to the receiver.
The ARO EVO uses the common T1/T2-style optic mounting footprint, opening the door to a large aftermarket of compatible mounting solutions when a different height or mount design is desired.
Built for Field Use
The optic body is manufactured from 6061 aluminum with a hard-anodized black finish. Holosun rates the ARO EVO for IPX8 water resistance and 1000G vibration resistance.
Windage and elevation adjustments move in 0.5 MOA increments with approximately ±50 MOA of adjustment travel.
A Very Logical General-Purpose 5.56 Optic
The appeal of the ARO EVO SPR is that it does not force a rifle completely into either the red-dot or magnified-optic category.
Without a magnifier, it remains a fast 1x enclosed sight with a large window and highly visible circle-and-dot-style aiming system. Add magnification and the smaller center point, ranging references and BDC marks become genuinely useful for more deliberate shooting at intermediate distance.
For an AR-15 firing ammunition reasonably close to the M193 velocity profile, that makes the ARO-EVO-SPR-GR a particularly interesting choice for a defensive carbine, ranch rifle, training rifle or general-purpose 5.56 setup.
