The Hornady® SST® (Super Shock Tip) 6.5mm 140 Grain bullet is designed to deliver flat trajectories, excellent accuracy, and dependable terminal performance for modern hunting cartridges such as 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Remington, and 6.5x55 Swedish.
At the core of the SST design is a polymer tip that initiates rapid expansion upon impact, driving into the lead core to begin controlled deformation. Hornady’s InterLock® ring mechanically bonds the jacket and core, helping maintain bullet integrity and weight retention for deeper penetration and consistent performance on game.
The secant ogive profile and boat tail base contribute to a high ballistic coefficient—approximately 0.520 (G1)—allowing the bullet to retain velocity and energy at extended distances. This results in flatter trajectories and improved wind resistance, making it especially effective for longer-range hunting applications.
The tapered jacket design balances expansion across a range of velocities, ensuring reliable performance both at close range and at distance. The result is a large wound channel combined with sufficient penetration for medium to large game animals.
Application Insight: The 140 grain SST is a benchmark projectile for 6.5mm cartridges—offering an ideal balance of sectional density, ballistic efficiency, and terminal performance. It is a go-to choice for deer-sized game and larger, particularly where accuracy and downrange energy retention are priorities.
