Self-Illuminated Backup Sights for an Optics-Equipped Rifle

The Meprolight MEPRO FUBS 404100 is a self-illuminated flip-up backup sight set for Picatinny-equipped rifles and carbines. It is built for the shooter who wants a usable mechanical sighting system behind a red dot, holographic sight, LPVO, or other primary optic—especially when low-light visibility matters.

Unlike plain black backup sights, the MEPRO FUBS uses green Swiss tritium in both the front and rear sights. The rear sight has a 2-dot tritium arrangement, while the front sight uses Meprolight's TRU-DOT front sight reference. The tritium is always on, requires no batteries, and gives the shooter a visible sight reference in reduced-light conditions where standard backup sights can be hard to pick up.

Why Choose Tritium Flip-Up Sights?

Backup sights exist for the moment when the primary optic is removed, obstructed, damaged, fogged, out of battery, or otherwise unavailable. A standard BUIS set still depends on the shooter's ability to see the sights clearly. Tritium sights add a low-light reference without switches, electronics, or battery management.

That makes this sight set especially useful on preparedness rifles, defensive carbines, patrol-style rifles, training guns, and any AR-style setup where the owner wants a real secondary sighting system rather than a cosmetic rail accessory.

Not Just a Backup

The MEPRO FUBS can also serve as a primary iron sight set on a lightweight rifle or a simple carbine build. The sights fold down into a low-profile configuration when not needed, then flip into position quickly when the shooter wants a mechanical sight picture.

The rear sight uses a dual-aperture layout, and the front sight post can be adjusted for elevation without a dedicated front sight tool. Windage is adjusted at the rear sight with positive detent locking. That gives the owner practical zeroing control while keeping the sight set compact and ready to use.

Fitment and Setup Considerations

This sight set mounts to MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rails and installs with the included 2.5mm hex key. It is best suited to rifles and carbines with a continuous or properly aligned Picatinny sighting plane. Before ordering, confirm that the firearm has enough rail space for both sights and that the rear sight can fold and deploy without contacting the optic, magnifier, charging handle, or mount.

If the rifle uses a fixed front sight base, gas-block rail, nonstandard handguard height, or unusual optic mount height, verify sight compatibility and intended co-witness before installation. Backup sights are only useful when they are mounted securely, properly zeroed, and positioned where the shooter can actually use them.

Who Should Choose the Meprolight FUBS?

This is a strong choice for the shooter who wants flip-up backup sights with low-light capability, especially on an AR-15, pistol-caliber carbine, or other Picatinny-equipped rifle. It makes the most sense when the owner wants something more capable than basic polymer BUIS but does not want to rely on batteries for the backup sight picture.

It is less necessary for a rifle that already has fixed iron sights, a dedicated daylight-only range gun, or a build where the optic mount and rail layout will not allow a proper backup-sight installation. The value of this set is the combination of folding design, tritium illumination, Picatinny compatibility, and practical zeroing adjustments.

Popular Pairings

Features
  • Self-illuminated flip-up sight set: Provides front and rear backup sights with tritium visibility for low-light use without batteries or switches.
  • Green Swiss tritium illumination: Uses tritium inserts in both the rear sight and front TRU-DOT sight for an always-on aiming reference.
  • 2-dot rear sight configuration: Gives the shooter a tritium-enhanced rear sight reference matched with a tritium front sight.
  • Primary or backup sight use: Can serve as a mechanical backup to a red dot or optic, or as the primary sighting system on a simple rifle setup.
  • Flip-up deployment: Folds down into a low-profile position when not needed and flips into place when the shooter wants iron sights.
  • Dual-aperture rear sight: Provides a practical rear sight arrangement for different lighting, speed, and precision needs.
  • Toolless sight adjustment: Front elevation and rear windage can be adjusted without a dedicated sight tool during normal zeroing.
  • Picatinny rail mounting: Installs on compatible MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rails using the included 2.5mm hex key.
  • Polymer and metal construction: Combines durable high-grade polymer with metal components for a lightweight, rugged backup sight set.
  • 12-year tritium illumination rating: Provides long-service low-light sight visibility without battery replacement or charging.
  • Optic-failure insurance: Gives the rifle a secondary sighting system if the primary optic is obstructed, removed, damaged, fogged, or out of power.
