The Norma NXD .38 Special 80 Grain load takes a very different approach from traditional heavyweight revolver ammunition.

Instead of loading a conventional 125-, 130- or 158-grain lead-core bullet, Norma uses an extremely lightweight 80-grain NXD – Non-eXpanding Defense projectile manufactured from a copper-polymer matrix with engineered flutes in the nose.

80-Grain Copper-Polymer Matrix Projectile

The NXD projectile is not a conventional solid-copper bullet.

It is manufactured from an injection-molded copper-polymer matrix. This construction allows Norma to create a full-caliber projectile at substantially lower weight than a traditional lead-core or monolithic copper .38-caliber bullet.

The reduced projectile mass allows Norma to drive the 80-grain bullet considerably faster than traditional heavyweight .38 Special ammunition.

NXD Means Non-eXpanding Defense

NXD does not use a conventional hollow cavity and is not designed to mushroom like a jacketed hollow-point bullet.

Instead, the nose incorporates engineered flutes. Norma designed these channels to redirect fluid outward as the projectile travels through a fluid medium rather than relying on an expanding bullet to increase its frontal diameter.

This is the fundamental difference between NXD and a traditional JHP: the projectile is designed to retain its basic shape rather than expand.

No Hollow Cavity to Become Obstructed

Because NXD does not use a hollow-point cavity, its operating concept does not depend on that cavity remaining open before impact.

The combination illustrates an important ballistic principle: the NXD achieves its energy through relatively low projectile mass combined with high velocity rather than through the heavy bullet weights traditionally associated with .38 Special ammunition.

A Different Recoil Impulse from Traditional 158-Grain Loads

An 80-grain projectile weighs almost exactly half as much as a conventional 158-grain .38 Special bullet.

Norma identifies reduced recoil as one of the advantages of the NXD family. The lighter projectile can produce a distinctly different recoil impulse from traditional heavyweight revolver ammunition even though velocity is considerably higher.

Actual felt recoil will still depend heavily on firearm weight, barrel length, grip shape and the individual shooter.
