A .44 Magnum Double Rifle Built to Be Carried

The Davide Pedersoli Kodiak Survivalist takes one of the oldest serious hunting-rifle concepts—the side-by-side express rifle—and scales it into an unusually compact, practical package chambered in .44 Remington Magnum.

Instead of a magazine, bolt or lever between the shooter and the second shot, the Kodiak carries two loaded barrels immediately available in the action. Open the rifle, load one cartridge into each chamber and close it. Each barrel provides its own shot without cycling the action between them.

That is the fundamental appeal of the express-rifle concept: mechanical simplicity combined with an instantly available second round.

What makes the Survivalist particularly interesting is that Pedersoli accomplished this without producing the heavy double rifle normally associated with the design. The current production rifle weighs only 5.73 pounds and measures approximately 35-5/8 inches overall.

The “Gentleman's Survival Rifle” Makes Sense

Italian Firearms Group introduced the Kodiak Survivalist as what it called a “gentleman's survival rifle.” The phrase fits remarkably well.

This is not a modern survival rifle built around polymer furniture, detachable magazines or tactical accessories. Pedersoli approached the same problem from the opposite direction: two cartridges, two barrels, a simple break-open action, iron sights, walnut furniture and almost nothing required to make the rifle function beyond ammunition.

It is traditional gunmaking applied to the practical idea of a compact rifle that can be carried easily and brought into action immediately.

18-1/8-Inch Side-by-Side Barrels

Pedersoli's current factory specification gives the Kodiak Survivalist a barrel length of 460mm, or 18-1/8 inches. The side-by-side barrels are rifled with six grooves and a 1:20 twist rate for .44 Remington Magnum.

The compact barrels help keep both overall length and forward weight under control. That matters more on a double rifle than the raw barrel measurement might suggest because two barrels necessarily place considerably more steel ahead of the action than a conventional single-barrel rifle.

Pedersoli engineered the Survivalist around that reality rather than simply shortening an existing heavy express rifle.

.44 Magnum Is a Natural Fit for the Concept

The .44 Remington Magnum cartridge is normally associated with revolvers, but its relatively compact cartridge architecture makes it well suited to a short, handy rifle.

Pedersoli specifically selected .44 Magnum because the cartridge does not require the long barrels normally associated with traditional high-velocity express-rifle cartridges. Combined with the compact break-open action, that allows the complete rifle to remain short and light without becoming visually or mechanically awkward.

It also gives the Survivalist access to one of the most established centerfire sporting cartridges in North America rather than requiring an obscure proprietary double-rifle cartridge.

Two Shots Without Working an Action

The Kodiak is a true side-by-side double rifle, not a shotgun with rifle sights and not a repeating rifle styled to resemble an express gun.

The photograph makes the operating arrangement clear: the rifle uses two triggers, corresponding to the traditional double-gun arrangement. With a cartridge chambered in each barrel, the shooter has two mechanically immediate shots available without operating a bolt, lever or semiautomatic action between them.

After both cartridges have been fired, the action opens at the breech for unloading and reloading.

Color Case Hardened Action and Oiled Walnut

Pedersoli did not turn the Survivalist into a purely utilitarian firearm. The receiver carries a traditional color case hardened finish, while the stock and forend are made from oil-finished walnut.

Checkering is cut into the gripping areas of the walnut, giving the rifle useful purchase while preserving the visual character expected of a classic sporting double.

The contrast between the case-colored action, dark barrels and warm walnut gives the Survivalist the appearance of a traditional European sporting arm even though its dimensions and intended use are thoroughly practical.

5.73 Pounds Is Exceptionally Light for a Double Rifle

The current Pedersoli factory specification lists the Kodiak Survivalist at approximately 2.605 kilograms / 5.73 pounds.

That number is central to understanding the rifle. Traditional double rifles have an unavoidable tendency toward weight because every gun contains two barrels, two chambers and a sufficiently strong action to lock both of them together.

At under six pounds, the Survivalist moves the double-rifle idea into a very different role. It is light enough to carry as a woods rifle, ranch rifle or compact hunting firearm rather than being something primarily appreciated from a shooting rest.

Only 35-5/8 Inches Overall

The 18-1/8-inch barrels combine with the extremely short break-open receiver to produce a complete rifle measuring only 35-5/8 inches overall.

A break-open rifle does not require the long receiver and bolt travel of a conventional bolt action or the receiver and operating mechanism of many repeating designs. That lets Pedersoli put usable barrel length into a firearm that remains remarkably compact from buttplate to muzzle.

The result is a rifle that should handle much more like a compact upland double gun than the large-bore express rifles that inspired it.

Traditional Iron Sights with an Optics Option

Pedersoli preserves the Kodiak's traditional lines with barrel-mounted iron sights, but the company did not prevent the rifle from accepting modern optics.

The rib is pre-drilled to accept an optional Picatinny rail. A shooter who wants to retain the classic appearance can leave the rifle as supplied, while a red dot or compact optic can be added using the appropriate Pedersoli rail.

The important distinction is that the rail is optional; it is not permanently machined across the top of the rifle.

Not Just a Cut-Down Kodiak Express

The Survivalist belongs to Pedersoli's Kodiak family, but it was developed specifically as a compact express rifle rather than merely shortening the barrels of a conventional heavy double.

Pedersoli's design objective was to retain the quick second-shot capability and mechanical simplicity of the express rifle while reducing the size and weight that traditionally accompany two-barrel construction.

At 5.73 pounds with 18-1/8-inch barrels, the finished rifle shows how aggressively Pedersoli pursued that goal.

Made in Gardone Val Trompia, Italy

Davide Pedersoli manufactures firearms in Gardone Val Trompia, Brescia, one of the historic centers of Italian gunmaking. The company's modern production combines traditional firearm architecture with contemporary machining, barrel production and quality-control methods.

The Kodiak Survivalist is a particularly good example of what Pedersoli does differently: it looks and operates like a firearm whose basic concept predates the modern repeating rifle, yet it was designed as a new production model for 2026 rather than as a museum reproduction.

Who Is the Kodiak Survivalist For?

This rifle makes sense for someone who values simplicity, immediate second-shot capability, compact dimensions and traditional workmanship more than magazine capacity.

It is an unusual choice for the hunter or outdoorsman who wants something fundamentally different from another bolt action, lever gun or semiautomatic rifle without giving up the ability to use common .44 Magnum ammunition.

And unlike many unusual firearms, the Kodiak is not interesting merely because it is different. Its two-shot break-open mechanism, compact action and extremely low weight form a coherent design built around being carried in the field.
