Factory-Built Mossberg 990 SPX Magpul Short-Barreled Shotgun

The Mossberg 990 SPX Magpul Model 83014 is a factory-produced, gas-operated semi-automatic short-barreled shotgun chambered for 12-gauge shotshells up to 3 inches. It combines a compact 14.75-inch Accu-Choke barrel with a shoulder-fired Magpul SGA stock, SPX accessory-ready forend and optic-ready receiver.

Mossberg lists the shotgun with a 5+1 capacity when using 2.75-inch shells, a 33-inch overall length and an approximate weight of 7.35 pounds. Its shortened factory configuration provides considerably more compact handling than the otherwise similar 18.5-inch Model 83009 while retaining a conventional shoulder stock and adjustable length of pull.

NFA-Regulated Short-Barreled Shotgun

Because Model 83014 has a shoulder stock and a barrel shorter than 18 inches, it is federally classified as a short-barreled shotgun regulated under the National Firearms Act. It is not transferred in the same manner as an ordinary Title I shotgun and must remain with an appropriately qualified FFL/SOT until the required ATF transfer has been approved.

Mossberg describes this model as “Class 3.” More precisely, the firearm classification is short-barreled shotgun, or SBS. “Class 3” commonly refers to the Special Occupational Tax status held by a dealer qualified to conduct business in NFA firearms; it is not a separate federal firearm category.

This is also legally distinct from a pistol-grip-only Mossberg Shockwave. Model 83014 is manufactured with a shoulder stock and is expressly identified by Mossberg as an NFA/Class 3 shotgun.

Gas-Operated 990 Semi-Automatic System

The 990 SPX uses a gas-operated system contained within the forend. Mossberg designed the system to provide smooth, consistent cycling across a range of compatible ammunition while preserving the fast follow-up capability of a semi-automatic shotgun.

Critical internal components receive corrosion-resistant treatments and specialized finishes. Mossberg specifically identifies the gas piston, magazine tube, hammer and sear among the treated components. As with any semi-automatic shotgun, ammunition should be tested in the individual firearm to confirm reliable cycling, feeding, extraction, ejection and pattern performance.

14.75-Inch Accu-Choke Barrel

The matte-blue barrel measures 14.75 inches and uses Mossberg’s interchangeable Accu-Choke system. A Cylinder Bore choke tube is installed at the factory, giving the owner the option to use the supplied open choke or select another compatible Accu-Choke tube for an appropriate shooting application.

Choke selection should be matched to the specific ammunition. Confirm that any slug, buckshot or specialty load is suitable for the installed choke, and pattern the exact load before relying upon its point of impact or pellet distribution.

Optic-Ready Receiver with Multiple Footprint Options

The receiver has a patent-pending optic cut that accepts Shield RMSc-footprint micro red dots directly when the rear ghost-ring sight plate is removed. Mossberg also includes three adapter plates for optics using RMR, Docter and Leupold footprints.

The included adapter plates broaden optic compatibility without requiring a conventional receiver-top rail. The receiver is also drilled and tapped. An optic is not included, and footprint terminology alone does not guarantee compatibility with every sight. Confirm the exact optic model, supplied plate, required screws, mounting clearance and manufacturer torque specification before installation.

Metal Ghost-Ring and Fiber-Optic Sights

Model 83014 arrives with a metal ghost-ring rear sight and a wing-protected fiber-optic front sight. The protective wings help shield the sights from incidental impact, while the fiber-optic front provides a highly visible aiming reference.

Removing the rear ghost-ring plate exposes the direct-mount optic cut. Mossberg designed the front sight height to support co-witness use with appropriately mounted compatible micro-dot optics.

SPX Forend with Heat Shield, M-LOK and QD Mounting

The SPX forend provides an integrated heat shield and multiple M-LOK accessory slots for compatible lights, controls, hand stops and other equipment. Strategically positioned QD ports on the forend, stock and magazine-tube extension provide several sling-mounting options.

Accessories should be positioned so they do not obstruct the loading port, charging handle, bolt release, safety, sight picture or movement of the operating system. Confirm that mounted equipment and fasteners cannot contact the barrel, gas system or internal components.

Magpul SGA Adjustable Stock

The black Magpul SGA stock uses removable spacers to provide an adjustable length of pull from approximately 12 to 14 inches. This allows the stock to be configured for different shooters, body armor, heavy clothing or individual stance preferences.

The SGA’s conventional grip angle also works naturally with the Mossberg tang-mounted safety. Integrated QD ports and sling provisions provide additional flexibility for configuring the shotgun’s carry system.

Enlarged Controls and Loading System

The 990 SPX is equipped with a top-mounted ambidextrous safety with a visible red indicator, knurled charging handle and oversized paddle-style bolt release. These enlarged controls are intended to improve access during loading, unloading and operation.

An enlarged and beveled loading port, elongated pinch-resistant elevator and high-visibility anodized orange magazine follower simplify loading and help the user visually identify the follower when checking the magazine tube.

Three-Inch Chamber and 5+1 Capacity

The shotgun has a 3-inch chamber and can use compatible 2.75- or 3-inch 12-gauge shotshells. Mossberg’s listed 5+1 capacity is based on 2.75-inch shells. Actual magazine capacity can vary with shell length and ammunition construction.

Use only ammunition of the correct gauge and an appropriate shell length. Never rely solely on the magazine follower, chamber indicator or position of the action to determine whether the shotgun is unloaded; physically and visually inspect the chamber, elevator and magazine tube.

Choosing Between Models 83014 and 83009

Choose Model 83014 when the objective is the most compact shoulder-fired version of the 990 SPX Magpul and the purchaser is prepared to complete the NFA transfer process. It has a 14.75-inch barrel, 5+1 capacity, 33-inch overall length and approximate weight of 7.35 pounds.

The non-NFA Model 83009 uses an 18.5-inch barrel, 7+1 capacity, 37.25-inch overall length and approximate weight of 7.75 pounds. It offers two additional rounds and avoids the SBS transfer process, but it is 4.25 inches longer. The operating system, Magpul SGA stock, accessory-ready forend and multi-footprint optic system are otherwise closely related.
