A Compact .223 / 5.56 Brake for the SilencerCo TOM System

The SilencerCo TOMD Compact Radial Brake AC5231 is a .223 / 5.56 muzzle brake for barrels threaded 1/2x28. TOMD stands for Thread Over Muzzle Device: this brake can be used on its own to reduce felt recoil, then paired with a separately purchased SilencerCo Thread Over Mount when the owner wants to attach a compatible suppressor.

Its radial brake design does not need to be timed or clocked on the barrel. That makes installation simpler than a directional brake while still giving the shooter a compact muzzle device that can serve as the foundation of a TOM suppressor-mount setup.

How the TOM System Works

The TOMD brake is the host device installed on the rifle barrel. It does not accept a suppressor directly. To use it as a suppressor mount, add the appropriate SilencerCo Thread Over Mount, which screws over the TOMD brake and connects to the rear interface of the compatible suppressor.

Choose the mount around the suppressor—not simply the barrel. The Bravo TOM Mount AC5230 is for suppressors using the Bravo accessory family, while the Charlie TOM Mount AC5229 is for suppressors using the Charlie accessory family. The brake, TOM mount, suppressor rear interface, and rifle caliber all need to be compatible before firing.

Why Choose TOMD Instead of Direct Thread or ASR?

This brake makes sense for the shooter who wants a compact radial brake left on the rifle while retaining a quick attach/detach suppressor option through the TOM system. It is a different system from SilencerCo ASR mounts and should not be purchased as an ASR replacement.

It is also not a direct-thread suppressor mount by itself. The value of TOMD is that the brake remains installed on the host barrel, while the separate TOM mount provides the suppressor connection when needed.

1/2x28 Thread and .223 / 5.56 Bore Considerations

AC5231 is specifically the 1/2x28-threaded version with a .223 / 5.56 aperture. Confirm the barrel's actual muzzle thread pattern before ordering. A matching thread pitch alone is not enough: verify proper shoulder support, bore clearance, suppressor rating, and alignment for the firearm and ammunition being used.

This is the .223 / 5.56-bore version of the TOMD brake and should not be used with larger projectiles such as .30-caliber rifle cartridges. For a 1/2x28 barrel requiring a .30-caliber bore, use the AC5232 instead.

As with any muzzle brake, the recoil reduction comes with more lateral blast and concussion than a comparable flash hider when fired unsuppressed. That tradeoff is worth considering for a rifle used around other shooters, inside covered firing lines, or in confined environments.

Who Should Choose AC5231?

This is a strong choice for a shooter building a .223 / 5.56 rifle around the SilencerCo TOM system and needing a compact 1/2x28 host brake. It is especially useful when the goal is simple installation, no timing requirement, recoil reduction during unsuppressed use, and the ability to add the correct Bravo or Charlie TOM mount later.

It is not the right choice for a rifle that needs an ASR muzzle device, a flash hider, a .30-caliber bore, or a direct-thread suppressor solution without an added mount component.

Popular Pairings

Features
  • Thread Over Muzzle Device design: Serves as the barrel-mounted host device for the SilencerCo TOM suppressor-mounting system.
  • Compact radial brake profile: Provides recoil-reduction capability without adding the size of a larger directional brake.
  • No timing required: Radial port geometry eliminates the need to clock the brake or use timing shims during normal installation.
  • .223 / 5.56 bore: Uses the correct aperture for compatible .223 and 5.56 rifle applications.
  • 1/2x28 host thread pattern: Fits compatible barrels threaded 1/2x28 after confirming proper shoulder support and bore alignment.
  • TOM mount compatibility: Works with the separately purchased SilencerCo Bravo TOM or Charlie TOM mount, selected around the suppressor's rear mounting interface.
  • Standalone muzzle-brake function: Can remain on the firearm as a compact radial brake when a suppressor is not attached.
  • System-specific fitment: Not an ASR muzzle device and does not directly accept a suppressor without the correct Thread Over Mount.
