Toolcraft Black Nitride with a Known 9310 Bolt
The Toolcraft 5.56 / .223 / .300 Blackout Black Nitride Bolt Carrier Group is a complete AR-15 operating assembly built around a full-mass 8620-steel carrier and a 9310 steel bolt. This Huckleberry Arms listing specifically identifies the bolt material as 9310, so the buyer knows exactly which Toolcraft configuration is being shipped rather than receiving a mixed or unspecified production variant.
That distinction matters because Toolcraft manufactures AR-15 bolts in both 9310 steel and Carpenter 158. Both materials are used across Toolcraft's product line, but they are different specifications. This particular BCG is the 9310 version.
The standard 5.56-size bolt face makes this carrier group suitable for properly configured AR-15 uppers chambered in 5.56 NATO, .223 Remington, .223 Wylde and .300 AAC Blackout.
A Straightforward Working-Rifle BCG
Black nitride is an excellent fit for a general-purpose AR-15 because it combines a hard, corrosion-resistant surface with a smooth finish that is relatively easy to clean. Toolcraft's black-nitride treatment is a salt-bath nitrocarburizing process commonly referred to as SBN or QPQ.
Unlike a relatively thick plated coating applied over the component, nitriding modifies the surface of the steel with little dimensional change. The result is a deep black finish that improves wear and corrosion resistance while preserving the dimensions of the underlying component.
For a defensive rifle, hunting upper, training gun or spare BCG, the appeal is simple: proven conventional materials, a full-mass carrier and a finish that does not require special handling.
9310 Steel Bolt — Shot Peened and MPI Inspected
The bolt is manufactured from 9310 alloy steel. Toolcraft shot peens the completed bolt to improve fatigue resistance at highly stressed areas such as the locking lugs and subjects it to magnetic-particle inspection to check for surface and near-surface discontinuities.
9310 is not the same material as Carpenter 158, and this listing does not attempt to blur the two together. Shooters who specifically want the traditional Carpenter 158 bolt specification should select a Toolcraft C158 configuration instead. This model is for the buyer who intentionally wants the Toolcraft 9310 version.
Full-Mass 8620 M16-Profile Carrier
The carrier is machined from domestic aircraft-quality 8620 steel and uses the full-mass M16-style profile. Forward-assist serrations make it compatible with conventional AR-15 upper receivers equipped with a forward assist.
A full-mass carrier provides a useful baseline for a general-purpose rifle because carrier mass works together with gas pressure, action-spring rate and buffer weight to control unlocking and cycling. This is not a lightweight competition carrier or a radically altered operating component; it retains the conventional mass and geometry expected in a standard direct-impingement AR-15.
Properly Staked 4130 Gas Key
The carrier key is manufactured from 4130 steel and secured with Grade 8 screws. Toolcraft properly stakes those screws to resist loosening during repeated firing and thermal cycling.
Gas-key assembly is one of the less glamorous but more important details on an AR-15 BCG. The key forms the connection between the rifle's gas tube and carrier. Movement or leakage at this joint can reduce the operating energy available to cycle the action and cause inconsistent function.
Complete Bolt Carrier Group
This is a complete BCG rather than a stripped carrier. The assembly includes the carrier, 9310 bolt, extractor, ejector, three gas rings, gas key, cam pin, firing pin and firing-pin retaining pin.
Toolcraft's current component specifications identify a 4140-steel extractor, Mil-Spec O-ring, three gas rings, 4140-steel cam pin and a ground 8740-steel firing pin with a hard-chrome finish.
5.56, .223 and .300 Blackout Share the Same Bolt Face
5.56 NATO, .223 Remington and .300 AAC Blackout use the same basic AR-15 bolt-face dimensions. A properly configured .300 Blackout upper therefore uses the same standard 5.56-size bolt carrier group as a 5.56 or .223 upper.
The barrel and chamber determine which cartridge the firearm is designed to fire—not the BCG. This shared mechanical compatibility must never be confused with ammunition interchangeability. .300 Blackout ammunition must not be fired through a 5.56 or .223 barrel.
Inspect, Lubricate and Verify Headspace
Before initial use, inspect the carrier group and apply suitable firearm lubricant to the carrier rails, bolt body, gas rings and cam-pin contact surfaces. Confirm that the extractor and ejector move normally, the gas rings provide appropriate resistance and the bolt rotates completely into and out of the locked position.
Headspace is established by the relationship between the bolt and barrel extension. Whenever a bolt is paired with a barrel that has not previously been checked with that exact bolt, headspace should be verified using appropriate gauges before live ammunition is fired.
