RSR-Exclusive Holosun ARO 22mm Red Dot in Flat Dark Earth
The Holosun ARO-RD2-FDE is an RSR-exclusive Flat Dark Earth rifle sight built around a crisp 2 MOA red dot and a compact 22mm optical window. It combines Holosun’s Shake Awake technology, manual brightness control, long CR2032 battery life and the widely supported Aimpoint Micro mounting footprint.
Holosun includes both a 1.63-inch lower 1/3 co-witness mount and a 1.05-inch low mount. The two mounting heights allow the same optic to be adapted to conventional AR-pattern rifles, carbines, pistol-caliber carbines, shotguns and other compatible Picatinny-equipped firearms.
Important Model Identification: ARO, Not ARO-EVO
ARO-RD2-FDE is the 22mm ARO configuration, now represented within Holosun’s ARO-CORE family. It is not the larger ARO-EVO. The distinction is important because the two product families use similar names but have different housings and electronic features.
- ARO-RD2-FDE: 22mm optical window, manual brightness control, Shake Awake and no solar panel.
- ARO-EVO: Larger 26mm optical window with Solar Failsafe and automatic-brightness capability on applicable models.
This product page applies specifically to manufacturer part number ARO-RD2-FDE, distributor SKU HSARO-RD2-FDE and UPC 810047074311.
22mm Optical Window
The ARO uses a 22mm optical window—slightly larger than the traditional 20mm format associated with many earlier micro red dots while retaining a compact housing. The window provides a clear, efficient sight picture without the added size of the 26mm ARO-EVO housing.
Holosun designed the ARO housing to align naturally with its magnifier family. Actual magnifier alignment will depend on the selected mount heights and the configuration of the host firearm.
Precise 2 MOA Red Dot
The single 2 MOA red dot provides a practical balance between rapid acquisition and precise aiming. At 100 yards, 2 MOA corresponds to approximately two inches of angular coverage, although the dot’s apparent size and clarity will vary with brightness, ambient light and the shooter’s eyesight.
This is a dot-only optic. It does not include Holosun’s Multi-Reticle System, circle-dot reticle or the bullet-drop and ranging references found in the separate ARO-EVO SPR models.
Manual Brightness with Night-Vision-Compatible Settings
The optic provides 12 manually selected brightness settings: 10 daylight settings and two settings intended for use with compatible night-vision equipment. Manual control allows the shooter to select the reticle intensity appropriate for the lighting conditions rather than relying on an automatic-brightness system.
ARO-RD2-FDE does not contain a solar cell and does not provide Solar Failsafe or automatic brightness adjustment.
Shake Awake and Last-Setting Memory
Holosun’s Shake Awake technology allows the optic to deactivate its LED after remaining motionless and reactivate when movement is detected. Last-setting memory restores the previously selected illumination level when the optic wakes.
The sleep interval can be configured according to the options described in the Holosun manual. Shake Awake can also be disabled when continuous illumination is preferred.
CR2032 Battery with Up to 50,000 Hours of Operation
The ARO is powered by a common CR2032 lithium battery. Holosun rates battery life at up to 50,000 hours under its specified operating conditions. Actual service life will vary with brightness setting, environmental conditions, battery quality and frequency of use.
The side-loading battery arrangement permits battery replacement without removing the optic from its mount and disturbing its installed position. Confirm zero after service or any significant impact.
Two Picatinny Mounting Heights Included
The included 1.63-inch mount places the optic at a modern lower 1/3 co-witness height commonly used on AR-pattern rifles and carbines. The included 1.05-inch low mount supports firearms where the sight needs to sit closer to the receiver or top rail.
The optic uses the established Aimpoint Micro or T1/T2-style mounting footprint. While this creates access to a large aftermarket-mount ecosystem, always verify the mounting manufacturer’s stated compatibility, fastener requirements and installed optical centerline before purchase.
7075-Aluminum FDE Housing
The FDE housing is manufactured from 7075 aluminum, providing a strong but relatively lightweight structure for field, defensive and sporting applications. Holosun lists the exact FDE configuration at approximately 63 × 39 × 67mm and 125 grams.
The Flat Dark Earth finish coordinates with FDE rifles, mounts and accessories while offering a visual alternative to the more common black optic housing.
Appropriate Applications
The ARO-RD2-FDE is suited to rifles, carbines, pistol-caliber carbines, shotguns and other firearms equipped with a compatible Picatinny rail. Its single 2 MOA dot keeps the sight picture uncomplicated, while the two included mounts make it adaptable to both conventional AR sight height and lower-mounted platforms.
After installation, tighten all mounting hardware to the manufacturer’s specified torque, apply thread treatment only when directed and establish zero with the exact firearm and ammunition intended for use.
