A True Forged A2 Carry-Handle Upper for an AR-15 Build

The Luth-AR UR-A2-S A2 Stripped Upper Receiver gives the builder a traditional fixed-carry-handle upper machined from a premium 7075-T6 aluminum forging.

Unlike a flat-top receiver with a detachable carry handle added later, the A2 carry handle is integral to the receiver itself. The upper is already machined with the proper cuts for installation of a traditional A2 windage- and elevation-adjustable rear sight assembly, making it an excellent foundation for an A2-style rifle, service-rifle-inspired build or traditional fixed-sight AR.

Forged 7075-T6 Aluminum

Luth-AR precision machines the UR-A2-S from a 7075-T6 aluminum forging, the material and manufacturing approach traditionally associated with quality military-pattern AR receivers.

The receiver is then hard-coat anodized for surface hardness and corrosion resistance. Luth-AR also describes the receiver as having a tough, scratch-resistant protective coating over the anodized surface.

Factory-Machined A2 Rear Sight Pocket

The defining feature of an A2 upper is not simply the carry handle. The receiver must also be correctly machined to accept the complete A2 rear sight mechanism.

The UR-A2-S includes the proper receiver cuts for installation of an A2 rear sight with both windage and elevation adjustment.

The rear sight assembly itself is not included with this stripped receiver and must be installed separately.

Shell Deflector and Forward-Assist Housing

The receiver incorporates the familiar later-pattern AR features associated with the A2 configuration:

• Integral shell deflector
• Forward-assist housing
• Provision for installation of an ejection-port cover

Because this is the stripped version, the forward-assist assembly and ejection-port-cover components are not installed.

No M4-Style Feed-Ramp Cuts

Luth-AR specifically states that the UR-A2-S does not feature M4-style feed-ramp cuts.

This is an important distinction when selecting the rest of the upper-receiver components. The receiver follows the traditional A2 configuration rather than the later M4 receiver geometry.

For a period-correct or traditional rifle build, that is not a deficiency — it is part of what makes this upper appropriate for an A2-style configuration.

Built for .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO AR-15 Applications

Luth-AR lists the UR-A2-S for AR-15 applications in .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO.

The stripped receiver itself does not determine chambering. Final chambering, barrel configuration and ammunition compatibility are ultimately determined by the barrel and bolt installed in the completed upper.

8.4-Ounce Stripped Receiver

Luth-AR lists the stripped UR-A2-S at 8.4 ounces.

Factory dimensions are approximately 7-3/4 inches long, 4 inches high and 2 inches wide.

What “Stripped” Means

This listing is for the receiver body only. It is intentionally supplied without the small parts that convert it into an assembled A2 upper.

Components normally required to complete the receiver include:

• A2 rear sight assembly
• Forward-assist assembly
• Ejection-port cover assembly

The barrel, bolt carrier group, charging handle, gas system and handguard are also selected separately as part of the completed upper build.

A2 vs. Flat-Top AR Upper

A modern flat-top receiver provides a continuous Picatinny mounting surface for optics and detachable sights. The A2 takes the opposite approach: the carry handle and rear-sight housing are permanent parts of the receiver architecture.

That makes the A2 particularly attractive for shooters building a traditional iron-sighted rifle or recreating the handling and sighting arrangement associated with the classic M16A2-era AR platform.

An Excellent Foundation for a Traditional 20-Inch Rifle

The UR-A2-S is a natural starting point for a traditional 20-inch AR-15 rifle using an A2 front sight base, rifle-length gas system, fixed A2 stock and conventional two-piece handguards.

It can also serve as the receiver for a custom fixed-carry-handle configuration where the builder wants modern barrel or internal components while retaining traditional A2 external geometry.

Build It the Way You Want It

Because Luth-AR supplies this receiver stripped, the builder is not paying for rear-sight, forward-assist or ejection-cover components that may already be on hand or that the builder intends to select separately.

That also makes UR-A2-S a useful companion to Luth-AR's growing line of A2 sight assemblies, furniture, handguards and receiver components.
