Compact First-Generation MIRA Safety Geiger-1
The MIRA Safety Geiger-1 is a pocket-size radiation detector and personal dosimeter designed to provide an accessible indication of changes in ambient ionizing radiation. Its compact polymer body, two-button controls and LCD make it suitable for emergency-preparedness kits, travel bags, vehicles and household radiation-awareness applications.
Inside the Geiger-1 is an SBM20-1 Geiger-Müller tube. The detector registers ionizing events and converts them into a dose-rate reading displayed in microsieverts per hour. A separate dosimeter function lets the user view accumulated dose over time.
Dose Rate and Accumulated Dose
The ambient dose-rate display helps the user compare present radiation levels with the normal background established in a particular location. The accumulated-dose function tracks exposure registered by the instrument over time, providing information that an instantaneous reading alone cannot show.
Readings require approximately 20 seconds to stabilize. Because radioactive emissions occur randomly, a single short measurement should not be treated as a complete assessment. Allow the unit to collect multiple readings and look for a sustained change above the established background.
SBM20-1 Geiger-Müller Detector
MIRA Safety’s published Geiger-1 specifications list gamma-radiation detection beginning at a photon energy of 0.1 MeV. This value describes the energy of detectable gamma photons; it is not the detector’s minimum dose-rate reading and should not be interpreted as a microsievert measurement.
Distance, measurement time, shielding, source energy, source geometry and the detector’s orientation can all affect the displayed result. The Geiger-1 indicates radiation levels but does not identify the radioactive isotope or determine the exact source.
Audible and Visual Warning
The Geiger-1 provides audible and visual indications of detected radiation events. MIRA Safety lists an integrated alarm threshold of 0.3 microsieverts per hour, with configurable threshold, sound and light settings available through the two-button control system.
An alarm indicates that the programmed threshold has been reached or exceeded. It does not, by itself, identify the source or determine the appropriate emergency response. Move away from a suspected source and follow instructions from public-health, emergency-management or radiation-safety authorities.
Replaceable LR44 Batteries
The detector operates on two replaceable LR44 alkaline button-cell batteries. This avoids dependence on a proprietary rechargeable battery and makes replacement cells easy to store with the detector in an emergency kit.
Check the batteries periodically and remove them before extended storage if leakage is a concern. Battery condition can affect operation, so the detector should be tested before it is relied upon.
Geiger-1 Versus Geiger-2
This listing is specifically for the first-generation Geiger-1 shown in the product photographs. It uses a monochrome LCD and two replaceable LR44 batteries.
It is not the newer Geiger-2 currently featured in MIRA Safety’s catalog. Buyers should not expect the Geiger-2’s color display, USB-C charging, internal rechargeable battery or other second-generation features.
