Toolcraft Nickel Boron for 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC and .22 ARC
The Toolcraft Nickel Boron Bolt Carrier Group is a complete AR-15 operating assembly built around the larger Type II bolt face used by 6.5 Grendel and compatible cartridge families. This configuration uses a 9310 alloy-steel bolt with a .136-inch Type II bolt-face depth, paired with a full-mass 8620-steel carrier and Toolcraft's smooth Nickel Boron finish.
The same basic bolt-face geometry is used by properly configured AR-15 uppers chambered in 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC and .22 ARC, making this BCG useful across several increasingly popular intermediate-range AR cartridges.
This is not a standard 5.56-size bolt. The larger case head requires the corresponding Grendel-family bolt face and a barrel extension designed around the same Type II specification.
9310 Steel Type II Bolt
The bolt is manufactured from 9310 alloy steel and uses the modern Type II .136-inch bolt-face depth that has become the common standard for current 6.5 Grendel-pattern barrels and related cartridges.
Toolcraft shot peens and magnetic-particle inspects its bolts as part of its quality-control process. Shot peening places compressive stress into the surface of highly loaded areas such as the locking lugs, while magnetic-particle inspection provides a method of checking for surface and near-surface discontinuities that may not be visible during an ordinary visual inspection.
One important correction from the previous Huckleberry Arms listing: 9310 is not Carpenter 158. They are separate alloy-steel specifications. This particular Toolcraft configuration uses a 9310 bolt.
Why Nickel Boron?
Toolcraft's Nickel Boron coating provides a very smooth bearing surface intended to reduce friction between moving components. The bright finish also makes carbon deposits, lubricant coverage and wear patterns easy to see when inspecting the BCG.
That can be particularly useful on a suppressed or high-volume rifle, where carbon accumulation around the bolt tail and carrier becomes noticeable relatively quickly. The smooth surface generally wipes clean more easily than a rougher traditional phosphate exterior.
Nickel Boron does not eliminate the need for lubrication. The carrier rails, bolt body, gas rings and cam-pin contact surfaces should still receive suitable firearm lubricant according to the rifle manufacturer's recommendations.
Full-Mass 8620 M16-Profile Carrier
The carrier is manufactured from domestic aircraft-quality 8620 steel and uses a full-mass M16-style profile with forward-assist serrations. This retains the conventional reciprocating mass and geometry used in a standard direct-impingement AR-15 operating system.
A full-mass carrier provides a predictable starting point when tuning a 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC or .22 ARC rifle because carrier mass works together with gas-port size, gas-block setting, buffer weight, spring rate, ammunition pressure and suppressor use.
Properly Staked Gas Key
Toolcraft's current carrier specification uses a 4130-steel gas key secured with Grade 8 screws that are properly staked to resist loosening during repeated firing and thermal cycling.
The gas key is a critical part of the direct-impingement operating system. Gas entering through the gas tube acts through the key and carrier, so leakage or movement at this joint can reduce available operating energy and create inconsistent cycling.
Complete Bolt Carrier Group
This is a complete BCG rather than a stripped carrier or replacement bolt. The assembly includes the carrier, 9310 Type II bolt, extractor, ejector, gas rings, gas key, cam pin, firing pin and firing-pin retaining pin.
The carrier includes a shrouded firing pin and forward-assist serrations for compatibility with conventional AR-15 upper receivers.
6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC and .22 ARC Compatibility
6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC and .22 ARC use the same general Grendel-family case-head dimensions and can therefore use the same Type II .136-inch bolt-face configuration when the upper is otherwise properly assembled for the intended cartridge.
The shared bolt face does not make the cartridges themselves interchangeable. The barrel, chamber, ammunition and magazine must match the specific cartridge being fired.
These cartridges also require purpose-built magazines with internal geometry designed around the wider case body. Standard 5.56 magazines should not be assumed to provide reliable feeding.
Verify Barrel Compatibility and Headspace
Confirm that the barrel is designed for a Type II .136-inch bolt before installing the BCG. Older or unusual barrel configurations may use different bolt dimensions, and mixing incompatible bolt and barrel specifications can create an unsafe or nonfunctional assembly.
Headspace is established by the relationship between the individual bolt and barrel extension. Whenever a bolt is paired with a barrel that has not previously been checked with that exact bolt, headspace should be verified with the appropriate gauges before live ammunition is fired.
