Remington .308 Winchester Subsonic Ammunition
Remington Subsonic Rifle 27746 is a current-production .308 Winchester load built around a 205-grain hollow-point projectile. Remington rates this ammunition at 1,050 feet per second, keeping the projectile below the speed of sound under the manufacturer’s test conditions while retaining the mass needed for useful downrange energy.
Each box contains 20 rounds of suppressor-optimized rifle ammunition. Remington identifies this load for predator hunting and target shooting.
205-Grain Hollow-Point Projectile
The heavy 205-grain hollow-point projectile is purpose-built for consistent performance at subsonic velocity. Its published ballistic coefficient is .480, and Remington lists muzzle energy at 502 foot-pounds.
Remington’s current product page identifies this projectile simply as a hollow point. It should not be confused with the older 190-grain bonded hollow-point loading that previously circulated under the same 27746 part number and UPC.
Subsonic Performance Without the Supersonic Crack
A projectile traveling faster than the local speed of sound produces a ballistic crack that a suppressor cannot eliminate. Remington loads this ammunition to a factory-rated 1,050 fps to remain subsonic under its test conditions, eliminating that separate supersonic signature.
Subsonic ammunition is not silent. Muzzle blast, action noise, bullet impact and other mechanical sounds remain. A compatible suppressor can further reduce muzzle-blast noise, but appropriate hearing protection should still be used according to the suppressor and firearm manufacturers’ guidance.
The speed of sound changes with temperature, altitude and atmospheric conditions. Actual velocity also varies with barrel length, chamber dimensions and ammunition lot, so subsonic performance cannot be guaranteed from every firearm under every condition.
Suppressor-Optimized Propellant and Enclosed Bullet Base
Remington uses carefully selected propellants intended to provide consistent subsonic velocities while reducing fouling in suppressor ports. The current Subsonic Rifle line also uses an enclosed bullet base to reduce the amount of exposed lead subjected to hot propellant gases.
This construction can help limit lead buildup inside a suppressor compared with projectiles having exposed lead at the base. It does not eliminate the need to follow the suppressor manufacturer’s inspection, cleaning and maintenance procedures.
Factory Ballistic Performance
Remington lists velocity at 1,050 fps at the muzzle, 1,003 fps at 100 yards, 963 fps at 200 yards, 928 fps at 300 yards, 897 fps at 400 yards and 869 fps at 500 yards.
Published energy is 502 foot-pounds at the muzzle, 457 foot-pounds at 100 yards, 422 foot-pounds at 200 yards, 392 foot-pounds at 300 yards, 367 foot-pounds at 400 yards and 344 foot-pounds at 500 yards.
Subsonic .308 Winchester has substantially more trajectory drop than conventional supersonic .308 ammunition. Remington’s published 100-yard-zero data shows approximately 33 inches of drop at 200 yards and 103.8 inches at 300 yards. Shooters must establish a dedicated zero and verify every hold with the exact firearm, optic, ammunition and environmental conditions being used.
Host-Firearm Function and Bullet Stability
Subsonic ammunition may not generate enough gas pressure or recoil impulse to cycle every semi-automatic .308 rifle. Function depends on the firearm, barrel length, gas system, buffer or recoil system, suppressor and ammunition lot. Manual operation may be required in a firearm that is not configured for subsonic ammunition.
The host barrel must also stabilize the long, heavy 205-grain projectile. Before firing through a suppressor, confirm ammunition compatibility and projectile stability with the firearm and suppressor manufacturers. Test for stable, round bullet holes without the suppressor attached before risking a baffle or end-cap strike.
Important 205-Grain Identification
This listing is specifically for the current 205-grain, 1,050-fps Remington loading. Older inventory and distributor databases may associate part number 27746 and UPC 047700277462 with a legacy 190-grain loading.
Customers seeking the current version should confirm that the package states 205 grains and 1,050 fps. The product name, specifications and structured data on this page apply only to the current 205-grain ammunition.
